Hantavirus, a serious disease spread by rodents, has claimed four lives in the US state of Arizona alone this year. Health officials have issued a warning after seven cases of Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS) were reported from January to July. California also reported two cases.
This virus attacks the lungs, causing difficulty breathing. Early symptoms include fever, headache, and muscle pain. Unfortunately, there’s no cure or vaccine. However, early treatment in intensive care can improve the chances of survival.
How does it spread?
Hantavirus spreads to humans through contact with infected rodent droppings, urine, or saliva. It’s crucial to avoid these to prevent infection. The virus causes flu-like symptoms initially, but can rapidly progress to severe respiratory problems.
How to protect yourself
- Avoid contact with rodent droppings, urine, and saliva.
- Clean infested areas carefully, wearing gloves and a mask.
- Control rodent populations to prevent infection.
- Wash hands thoroughly after any exposure

- Abdominal pain
If these symptoms worsen and you experience difficulty breathing, seek medical help immediately.
There’s no specific treatment or vaccine for hantavirus. However, early detection and intensive care can improve survival chances.
