Indian households cooking with LPG cylinders got a welcome surprise this week. Prime Minister Modi announced a ₹100 deduction in the Price of LPG, coinciding with International Women’s Day. This move aims to particularly benefit women, who often manage cooking duties.
PM Modi said – “By making cooking gas more affordable, we also aim to support the well-being of families and ensure a healthier environment. This is in line with our commitment to empowering women and ensuring ‘Ease of Living’ for them,” he added”
Also on Thursday, Central government announced extension of 300 Rupees per cylinder subsidy to poor women under the PM Ujjwala Yojana. This will applicable from the April 1st 2024.
Opposition Question Timing of deduction in the Price of LPG
However, the news wasn’t universally praised! Opposition leaders saw an ulterior motive. NCP MP Supriya Sule, called it a “political gimmick” timed for the upcoming elections. She said – “I am not surprised at all. Just look at the timing of deduction. Why this is not done earlier and only before the election? I was expecting this news to come in next 5-6 to days.”Ye aur ek jumla hai..” In our government the price was 430 rupees. why they don’t match us? “
Congress spokesperson Surendra Rajput said: “The BJP is a very clever party. They sell (LPG) cylinders of ₹395 at ₹1000 and then PM Modi makes an announcement of reducing it by ₹100.”
Samajwadi Party Mahila Sabha National President Juhie Singh called the PM Ujwala Yojana a fraud.
Despite the criticism, the price reduction is a tangible benefit for millions of households.exclamation The success of this policy might hinge on its sustainability.
