The purpose of doing Govardhan Puja is…
There’s an old story about Govardhan Puja. Once, Lord Krishna told the people of Gokul to worship Govardhan Mountain instead of Indradev. Before, the people of Gokul used to worship Indradev as their god. Lord Krishna explained that it’s because of Govardhan Mountain that their animals have food to eat and that it rains in Gokul. So, they should worship Govardhan Mountain instead of Indradev.
When Indradev found out about this, he got very angry and caused heavy rain in Braj. To protect the people of Braj, Lord Krishna lifted Govardhan Mountain with his little finger and saved them from Indra’s anger. The people of Braj then offered 56 different foods to Lord Krishna. Pleased with this, Lord Krishna promised to always protect the people of Gokul.
