Chennai, India – Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, the top-ranked engineering institute in India for the ninth consecutive year, has announced plans to launch a BSc BEd program next year to address the shortage of quality mathematics teachers in the country.
IIT-Madras Director V Kamakoti revealed the plans during an interview, highlighting the institute’s commitment to producing highly skilled educators. IIT-Madras BSc BEd Program, offered in collaboration with the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), aims to train 500 mathematics teachers annually.
In addition to the new program, IIT-Madras is also expanding its School of Interdisciplinary Studies to offer MTech and PhD programs. The school will bring together faculty members from various departments to encourage innovation and research across disciplines.
The institute has also been actively promoting entrepreneurship through its Startup 100 initiative, which aims to launch a new startup every three days. To further improve diversity and inclusivity, IIT-Madras is considering introducing a cultural quota for artists in its admission process.
Despite its success in attracting top talent, IIT-Madras has faced challenges in competing with IIT Bombay for the top JEE rankers. The institute is taking steps to address this issue by reaching out to more companies for internships and placements, and by offering additional support to students.
To ensure the well-being of its students, IIT-Madras has implemented various measures to prevent suicides on campus, including wellness surveys, counseling services, and increased vacation time. The institute is also working to create a more inclusive and supportive campus environment.
