IIT Guwahati is witnessing a huge number of student protest after the suicide of 21-year-old third-year B.Tech student, Bimlesh Kumar. The death of the third student at the institute this year was a tragedy that has raised questions about how students are faring in their academics.
Students erupted in protest, accusing the institute of fostering a “toxic environment” that contributes to excessive academic pressure. Hundreds gathered outside the administration building, demanding reforms and the removal of Dean of Academic Affairs, Professor K.V. Krishna.

Students Demand
- Students called for expanded counseling services and readily available mental health support systems.
- Protesters argued that the current attendance policy unfairly penalizes students who excel academically but may miss classes due to extenuating circumstances.
- Demands also included the resignation of Assistant Professor Rajkumar Thummer, accused of misconduct towards students.
Response from IIT Guwahati
IIT Guwahati decided to accept the resignation of Professor Krishna and announced that they would take a bunch of new steps for better student welfare, in response to these protest
- The institute will provide longer hours and additional access to counseling.
- Information about mental health resources will also be prominently displayed on the screens of hostel doors in QR code format.
- The current peer mentorship program will be enhanced to offer students more support.
