The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has been embroiled in a controversy surrounding a play performed during its annual Performing Arts Festival in March 2024. Titled “Raahovan,” the play, loosely based on the Hindu epic Ramayana, triggered protests from a section of students who claimed it disrespected Hinduism and portrayed Lord Rama and Sita in negatively.
Following the play and subsequent complaints, IIT Bombay took disciplinary action against the students involved. At least eight students were penalized, with one student receiving a fine of Rs 1.2 lakh, nearly equivalent to a semester’s fee. Other students faced lesser fines and hostel suspensions. The graduating students received harsher penalties compared to their junior counterparts.
Details of the Play Remain Unclear
Although the exact nature of the play’s content is unknown, reports suggest that it offers a feminist reinterpretation of the Ramayana with changes to the names of the characters and the story. There are conflicting reports on audience reception, with some sources claiming the audience did not object, while others alleging mockery.
IIT Bombay officials have declined to comment on the specifics of the play. The rationale behind the quantum of fines imposed on the students. This lack of transparency has further fueled the controversy.
Freedom of Expression vs. Respect for Traditions
The incident raises questions about the balance between freedom of expression and respect for religious traditions in academic institutions. It is unclear whether the play genuinely aimed to offer a different perspective. Or if it crossed a line in its portrayal of revered figures.
