Engineering scholarships in India offer a lifeline for aspiring engineers facing financial constraints. These scholarships, provided by the Government of India, state governments, and private organizations, help deserving students pursue engineering degrees from top institutions. High academic achievers from financially challenged backgrounds can avail of these scholarships. To be eligible, students typically need to have passed their 12th standard from a recognized board and secured admission to an engineering program.

Scholarships for Engineering Students in India 2024

Prime Minister’s Scholarship Scheme for CAPF and Assam Rifles

The Ministry of Home Affairs started the Prime Minister’s Scholarship Scheme (PMSS) in 2006.

This scheme helps the children and widows of Central Armed Police Forces and Assam Rifles (CAPF and AR) personnel pursue higher technical and professional studies.  

The government offers 2,000 scholarships each year. This number is divided equally between girls and boys. The scheme also includes scholarships for students who already receive PMSS.  

If there are fewer than 1,000 boys or girls selected, the remaining scholarships will not be given to the other gender.

Amount:

  • INR 3,000 per month for girls
  • INR 2,500 per month for boys.

Eligibility:

  • Wards and widows of deceased CAPFs or AR personnel pursuing a professional degree.
  • Fresh applicants: 60% marks in Minimum Entry Qualification (MEQ) i.e. 10+2/Diploma/Graduation or equivalent.
  • Renewal applicants: 50% marks in each subsequent academic year of the professional courses being pursued.

MHRD Scholarship

The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) plays a vital role in India’s educational landscape. With a focus on improving education standards, the ministry offers a range of scholarships to support students financially.

The MHRD operates through two main departments:

  • Department of School Education & Literacy: Focuses on primary and secondary education.
  • Department of Higher Education: Handles university-level education and research.

Types of MHRD Scholarships

  • National-level scholarships: Offered by different MHRD departments.
  • External-level scholarships: Provided in partnership with foreign governments.

Eligibility:

  • Be enrolled in a regular course at a recognized college or institution.
  • Have scored at least 80 percentile in Class 12 or equivalent.
  • Have a family income of less than ₹4.5 lakhs per year.
  • Not be receiving any other scholarship.
  • Students with a valid GATE score are admitted to MTech/MSc programs at IITs/NITs.

Amount:

  • Graduation: ₹10,000 per year
  • Postgraduation: ₹20,000 per year
  • 5-year professional course: ₹20,000 per year in the 4th and 5th years

Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana Fellowship

  • Eligibility: Students with a science background in 10+2.
  • Amount: INR 20,000 to INR 28,000 per year.

Samsung Star Scholarship

  • Eligibility: Students from IITs/NITs pursuing BTech/MTech in select streams.
  • Amount: Up to INR 2,00,000 per annum.

Tata Trusts Scholarship

  • Eligibility: Students admitted to undergraduate programs at select institutions including IITs/NITs.
  • Amount: Up to INR 4,00,000 per annum.

L&T Build-India Scholarship

  • Eligibility: Students admitted to MTech programs in Construction Technology and Management at L&T-affiliated institutes.
  • Amount: INR 13,400 per month stipend and other benefits.

Merit-cum-Means based scholarships

Provides financial assistance to meritorious students from minority communities to pursue technical/professional courses

Criteria

  • Secured at least 50% marks in the previous exam
  • Annual family income less than ₹2.5 lakh

Amount: 

  • Course fee: ₹20,000 per annum (subject to actuals)
  • Maintenance allowance: ₹1,000/month for hostellers, ₹500/month for day scholars (for 10 months)

Duration: For the entire course duration

Eligibility: 

  • Students belonging to minority communities (Muslims, Sikhs, Christians, Buddhists, Jains, Zoroastrians)
  • Pursuing technical/professional UG/PG courses

ONGC Scholarship

Supports meritorious students from economically weaker sections to pursue higher education

Criteria:

  • Secured at least 60% marks in the previous exam
  • Annual family income less than ₹6 lakh

Amount: 

  • Tuition fee reimbursement
  • Maintenance allowance: ₹2,000/month

Duration: For the entire course duration

Eligibility: 

  • Students belonging to SC/ST/OBC/Minority categories
  • Pursuing UG/PG courses in engineering/geosciences

NTPC Scholarship scheme

Provides financial assistance to meritorious students from economically weaker sections to pursue higher education

Criteria:

  • Secured at least 60% marks in 10+2

Dhirubhai Ambani Scholarship programme

Criteria: 

Merit-cum-means basis; applicants must receive a Letter of Eligibility from Reliance Foundation.

Amount: 

Up to INR 41,000 per annum, varying by course (e.g., INR 36,000 for Engineering, INR 41,000 for Medicine).

Duration: 

Provided until completion of the selected undergraduate course, contingent on passing all subjects on the first attempt.

Eligibility: 

Students must be below 20 years of age, have passed Class 12, and have a family income not exceeding INR 4.5 lakh per annum. Specially-abled students are also eligible
