Many states in India are battling extreme heat, due to which state governments have had to announce early summer vacations in schools. It aims to protect the well-being of students during the extreme heat.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had predicted heatwaves in parts of Punjab, Haryana-Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, East Rajasthan, Gujarat, Saurashtra, and Kutch starting May 18. Temperatures in these regions have soared past 40 degrees Celsius, posing health risks, especially for children.
Here’s a quick look at the states that have rescheduled summer vacations:
- Punjab: Several districts in Punjab witnessed scorching temperatures, with Bathinda recording the hottest day at a staggering 46.4°C. In response, the summer vacation will now commence from May 21st instead of the planned June 1st, and run until June 30th.
- Haryana: The Haryana Directorate of School Education announced summer vacation for all schools from June 1st to June 30th. Schools will reopen on July 1st, 2024.
- Rajasthan: The Education Department declared summer vacation for all schools from May 17th to June 30th. Schools are strictly instructed not to conduct additional classes during this period.
- Delhi: Following its existing academic calendar, Delhi schools’ summer vacation began on May 11th and will conclude on June 30th.
- Madhya Pradesh: Madhya Pradesh schools’ summer vacation commenced early on May 1st and will continue until June 15th.
