New Delhi: A group of students from the Krantikari Yuva Sangathan (KYS) staged a protest outside Delhi University’s vice-chancellor’s office on Saturday. The DU students are upset about a recent fee hike and the quality of study material provided by the School of Open Learning (SOL).
The protest coincided with a meeting of the Delhi University Executive Council (EC). Where a report on fee hikes for various courses was discussed. The vice-chancellor had approved these hikes using emergency powers.
The KYS alleges that the fee hike have made higher education inaccessible for DU students from marginalized communities. They also claim that the study material for SOL students is substandard and contains numerous errors. The EC had previously rejected a proposal to approve this study material and ordered a review.
The students’ demands include:
- Immediate withdrawal of the fee hike
- Re-evaluation of the SOL study material
- An academic audit of SOL
- Increase in the number of seats for SOL students
The KYS believes that the National Education Policy 2020 has led to increased privatization of higher education. A focus on self-finance courses instead of government grants. This, they argue, has resulted in exorbitant fee hikes.
