Starting from 2025, CUET-UG will only be held as a computer-based test (CBT), and students will be able to take the exam for any subject, regardless of what they studied in 12th grade, according to University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Jagadesh Kumar.
In a conversation with PTI, Kumar mentioned that an expert group formed by the UGC looked at the exam and suggested various changes.
“Starting in 2025, the exam will only be held in CBT format, unlike last year. It was a mix of CBT and paper-based tests last year. We’ve also cut the number of subjects from 63 to 37. For the subjects we removed, students will be admitted based on their scores in the General Aptitude Test,” Jagadesh Kumar said.
“Additionally, candidates can choose subjects in the CUET-UG that they didn’t study in grade 12. This change lets students explore different fields in higher education without being limited by their earlier studies,” he added.
Kumar further explained the updates for the 2025 exam: “Students can take the CUET-UG in a maximum of five subjects, down from six in the past.”
“The exam time, which used to be between 45 and 60 minutes depending on the subject. Now time is set at 60 minutes for everyone. Also, there are no more optional questions—all questions are now required,” Kumar explained.
When the exam was first held in 2022, it faced technical problems. Because tests for a subject were spread across different time slots. The scores had to be adjusted when the results were announced.
In 2024, the exam was held in a new way for the first time. However, it was canceled in Delhi the night before it was supposed to happen due to logistical issues.
