The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has introduced updated safety guidelines for all affiliated schools. This new directive requires the installation of high-resolution CCTV cameras with audiovisual recording capabilities. This measure aims to create a more secure environment for students and staff.
Mandatory CCTV Coverage
Schools must now install CCTV cameras in all classrooms and common areas. These common spaces include entry and exit points, lobbies, corridors, staircases, laboratories, libraries, canteens, storerooms, and playgrounds. However, toilets and washrooms are excluded from this requirement. The surveillance system must support real-time audiovisual monitoring.
Footage Retention and Access
A key part of the new guidelines is footage retention. All recorded footage must be stored for a minimum of 15 days. Schools must also keep a backup of these recordings. Authorities can access this footage when needed. Regular system maintenance is also mandatory to ensure continuous surveillance coverage.
Aligning with Safety Standards
These updated safety measures align with the Manual on Safety and Security of Children in Schools. The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) issued this manual. It emphasizes providing a safe environment. This protects children from abuse, violence, and emotional harm like bullying. Such monitoring helps prevent issues and supports a positive school atmosphere.

Ensuring a Secure School Environment
CBSE stresses that student safety remains a primary responsibility for every school. The Board highlights the need for a secure and cohesive atmosphere. Vigilant staff and proper use of technology support this goal. All school members, including teachers, staff, visitors, and students, must contribute. Schools must fully comply with these updated guidelines to maintain their CBSE affiliation.
