Tech giant Microsoft is undergoing workforce restructuring, which will reportedly affect around 1,000 employees. The move comes as the company continues to adapt to the changing technological landscape. Layoffs are a common practice in the industry, as businesses adjust to market demands and streamline operations. Microsoft’s latest decision reflects this trend.
According to reports, the layoffs mainly affect two divisions: the Azure cloud unit and the mixed reality team. The Azure cloud unit, a significant driver of Microsoft’s growth, is undergoing workforce reduction. Microsoft’s layoffs impacted the HoloLens 2 team, responsible for the company’s augmented reality headset.
The Strategic Missions and Technology Division appears to be bearing the brunt of the layoffs. However, Microsoft assures continued investment in the broader mixed reality area through its W365 efforts. The company will continue to sell and support HoloLens 2 to existing customers.
This restructuring reflects Microsoft’s commitment to the Department of Defense’s Integrated Visual Augmentation System (IVAS) program. They are dedicated to providing advanced technology to the Army. Microsoft is committed to its Mesh technology, which allows users in the headset to participate in 3D video conferences within Teams.
