IIT Madras Receives Record Rs 228 Crore Donation

Chennai: The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M) has set a new benchmark in philanthropy. The prestigious institute IIT Madras has received a whopping Rs 228 crore as a single donation from its illustrious alumnus, Dr Krishna Chivukula. This is the largest-ever donation to an Indian educational institution.   

Dr Chivukula, a 1970 M.Tech graduate in Aerospace Engineering, is a successful entrepreneur. His companies, Shiva Technologies and Indo US MIM Tec, are global leaders in their respective fields.   

In recognition of his immense contribution, IIT-M has named an academic block after Dr Chivukula. The donation will be used for various initiatives, including scholarships for international students, research grants, fellowships for freshers, sports scholarships, and the maintenance of the newly named block.   

IIT-M Director, Prof. V Kamakoti, expressed gratitude for Dr Chivukula’s generosity, stating it will benefit future generations of students. The institute also raised a record Rs 513 crore in the 2023-24 financial year.   

This historic donation to IIT Madras underlines the growing trend of alumni giving back to their alma mater and highlights the importance of philanthropy in India’s education sector.
