Currently, Class 12 students under the CBSE curriculum take board exams only once a year, typically in February or March. They can retake specific subjects for improvement during supplementary exams held in July if needed.
However, things are set to change. To align with the recommendations of the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCFSE), the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is considering holding Class 12 board exams twice a year starting in 2026. This move is expected to benefit students by:
- The National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020) focused on reducing the pressure on students from high-stakes examinations. Biennial exams will provide more opportunities for students to perform well and potentially improve their scores.
- Students unhappy with their first attempt will have the option to take the exams again in June. This is particularly helpful for those aiming for specific marks for higher education admissions.
- The new system won’t be mandatory. Students satisfied with their performance in the first exam can choose not to appear for the second round.
- The CBSE is working on modifying the academic calendar to accommodate the second round of exams without impacting undergraduate admission deadlines.
This initiative reflects NEP 2020‘s more holistic approach toward education, shifting the focus from rote learning to developing well-rounded individuals.
