Infosys, India’s second-largest IT company, has started sending detailed warning emails to employees working beyond regular hours. This new policy impacts over 3.23 lakh employees and focuses on improving Infosys work-life balance and reducing health risks linked to overwork.
- Total employees: 323,500
- Max allowed daily work hours: 9 hours 15 minutes
- Minimum in-office presence: 10 days/month
- Monitoring introduced: November 2023
Infosys uses an automated tracking system to monitor remote work hours. Employees crossing the 9.15-hour mark receive personalized warnings from HR. These alerts include:
- Remote working days
- Daily and total monthly hours worked
- Health and wellness suggestions
This shift strongly contrasts with Infosys founder N.R. Narayana Murthy’s earlier appeal for a 70-hour workweek. The company, however, has taken a clear stand in favor of employee health and long-term sustainability. Focus Areas:
- Prevent physical and mental burnout
- Encourage short, regular breaks during work
- Recommend open discussions with managers if overwhelmed
- Emphasize rest, proper diet, and mental health
Why This Policy Matters
Many IT employees, especially young professionals, face growing cardiac and stress-related issues. Infosys aims to tackle this by reducing excessive work hours and building a healthier work culture.

The company’s internal note to employees states:
“We value your dedication, but we also believe your well-being matters for your long-term success.”
This move marks a clear change in corporate thinking in Indian IT—placing employee wellness above long working hours.
